MR. ERNEST LUTHER POWELL, age 90, of Lula, Georgia passed away on Monday, November 19, 2012 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Banks County, Georgia on December 14, 1921, Mr. Powell was a son of the late Martin Luther and Lora Greenway Powell. He was a United States WWII veteran, having served his country proudly in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Powell was a member of the local Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post # 7720, as well as the Woodmen of the World, Cornelia Lodge, the Civilian Conservation Corps., and was of the Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Minnie Powell Parson, Rosie Powell Parson, Ruby Powell Davidson, brothers, Charlie Powell, Arthur Powell, James “Pete” Powell, Willie Powell, Thomas Powell, & Swayne Powell.
Survivors include his loving wife, Julia Wade Powell, Lula, GA; brother, John Powell, Elberton, GA; sister-in-laws, Joyce W. Franklin, Alto, GA; Gertrude W. Grier, Lula, GA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2012 from the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Donnie Wilkes officiating. Interment will follow in the Yonah Congregation Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post # 7720, American Legion Post # 84, DA.V. Chapel #15, and the Georgia National Guard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
