Richard Scott Burton, born on September 30, 1963, in Demorest, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the age of 61. He is remembered as a dedicated public servant whose career spanned various roles in fire service and law enforcement. Beginning his career with the City of Cornelia's fire department, Richard later transitioned to law enforcement, serving with distinction in several communities, including Habersham County, City of Clarkesville, City of Mt. Airy, City of Demorest, City of Cornelia, and providing security at Piedmont College.

Richard was a proud alum of Habersham Central High School, graduating in 1981. His commitment to service was matched only by his love for family and passion for outdoor activities. He enjoyed spending time with animals, fishing, and honing his skills in woodworking, which brought him immense joy and satisfaction throughout his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Cheryl Bangs Burton; his sons & daughters-in-law Shawn and Maggie Burton, Shannon Burton, Jeremy and Kora Burton, and Matthew Burton; and his granddaughter Charlotte Burton, along with a granddaughter on the way, Violet Melissa Burton. Richard is also survived by his sister & brother-in-law Betty and Ken Simpson, brother William Edward Burton, and brother & sister-in-law Mitchell and Mary Lou Dill, and several nieces and nephews who cherished him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William Castalow Burton and Ora Lee Ansley Burton, as well as his daughter Emily Burton, grandson Marlo Robin Burton, and sister Elwanda Combs. Richard’s legacy of service and love for his family will endure through the lives he touched and the memories they hold close.
