Holbrooks Funeral Home, founded by Mr. Floyd Holbrook, was the first funeral home to locate to Cornelia in 1936. Joining the staff at a later date was George Sosebee who along with Tom McGahee, bought the funeral home in 1937.
In 1947, Joseph G. McGahee & Thomas J. McGahee together relocated the funeral home and furniture business on the corner of Hodges and Wells Street. The funeral home was located in the upstairs of the building and renamed Thomas J. McGahee Co.
With progress, the Taylor-Brewer home located on Clarkesville Street, was purchased, and James Reed became a member of the firm. In 1957, Weyman Griffin joined the staff, and they remained at this location until 1959.
In 1959, McGahee Funeral Home was moved to one of the oldest homes in Cornelia, the A.B. Irvin Home, at 538 North Main Street, which was owned by Mr. Hubert Ritchie.
In 1978, J. Michael Shirley joined the firm as a partner. Thomas J. McGahee retired in 1981. At this time, the business was purchased by Weyman & Claudette Griffin and the name changed to McGahee-Griffin Funeral Home. The Griffin family remained an integral part of the funeral home until their retirement in 1996. At this time, the Stewart family purchased the funeral home and continued to proudly serve the community for many years at the Main Street Home until growth prompted a more state-of-the-art facility. The new facility, completed in December 1999, was relocated to 175 VFW Post Road, Cornelia, which allowed for spacious viewing rooms, a 250-seat chapel, offices, a family lounge, and ample parking.
Kasey Charles McEntire, a long-time Habersham native, Funeral Director & Embalmer who had formerly worked with the firm, purchased the business in August of 2024 and changed the name to McGahee-Griffin & McEntire Funeral Home. Kasey’s career in the funeral industry spans over 26 years.
